Way Back When was created by its chief tour guide, Allison Morris – a musician, teacher and local historian who is one of the 6th generation of her family to have a presence in Black River.

Allison loves having conversations about her hometown, and that is what Way Back When tries to be – a lively, meaningful conversation. That’s why group sizes typically range from 4 to 10 people, although bigger groups can be hosted. The size of the group may impact the route the tour will take, as some areas of interest are not ideal for larger groups.
The tour was conceived as a walk, but depending on group size, and the needs of visitors, we may tour with you in your vehicle and walk only when we get to specific spots. The time of day may affect the route we take. Our regular start time is 8:30 am, but we also offer a sunrise walk, and a walk at sunset on some days. There is so much to see and talk about, that no two tours are exactly the same!
We’ll visit historic locations, and chat together about the events and the characters that helped shape Black River’s history from the 17th century onwards. The cast includes strong enslaved individuals, progressive thinkers, quirky civil servants, merchants, mistresses, and ordinary townspeople with an irreverent sense of humour. We’ll enjoy stories and songs that have been handed down through generations.
Our trip through Black River lasts just under two hours on average, including rest stops. The actual time spent walking is less than an hour – you’ll be so involved you won’t feel the time pass.
